Public vs. Private Blockchain Infrastructure for RWAs

As the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) continues to evolve, one of the most important decisions facing organizations is the choice of blockchain infrastructure. Whether representing real estate, commodities, private credit, investment funds, or other assets, the underlying blockchain network can influence how information is recorded, how participants interact with the system, and how governance and compliance are managed. Among the most common approaches are public and private blockchain networks, each offering distinct characteristics and potential use cases.

Public blockchains are open networks that allow anyone to view transactions, participate in network validation, or interact with decentralized applications, subject to the rules of the protocol. Well-known public blockchain ecosystems have attracted significant developer communities and support a broad range of digital asset applications. Their transparent nature enables publicly verifiable transaction histories and shared recordkeeping across a distributed network of participants.

For tokenized RWAs, public blockchains may offer advantages such as broad accessibility, interoperability with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and a high degree of transparency. Organizations may also benefit from established infrastructure, extensive developer ecosystems, and globally distributed network security. However, public networks may also present considerations related to transaction costs, network congestion during periods of high activity, data privacy, and evolving regulatory requirements.

Private blockchains, sometimes referred to as permissioned blockchains, operate under controlled access. Participation is generally limited to approved organizations or users, and governance is managed by one or more designated entities. Because access is restricted, private networks can offer greater control over participant permissions, data visibility, and operational policies.

Organizations exploring enterprise or institutional RWA applications may consider private blockchain infrastructure when confidentiality, regulatory compliance, or internal governance requirements are priorities. Private networks can also be configured to support specific business workflows, customized permissions, and performance requirements tailored to individual organizations or consortiums.

Rather than viewing public and private blockchains as competing approaches, many observers consider them complementary. Hybrid models are increasingly being explored, combining elements of both environments. For example, certain operational processes may occur on a private network while selected records or settlement events are anchored to a public blockchain to provide additional transparency or verification.

The choice between public and private infrastructure ultimately depends on the objectives of the project, the nature of the underlying assets, applicable regulatory requirements, and the needs of participating stakeholders. As blockchain technology continues to mature, organizations are likely to evaluate multiple infrastructure models to determine which approach best supports their operational, legal, and technical requirements. Rather than a one-size-fits-all solution, the future of tokenized real-world assets may involve a combination of public, private, and hybrid blockchain architectures working together to support an increasingly interconnected digital asset ecosystem.
